=== The Snowflake Man ===
Science can attribute the notion that no two snowflakes are alike, to the work of Vermont farmer Wilson “Snowflake” Bentley. As early as 1610, scientists had begun studying the basic structure of the snowflake. But Bentley made history in 1885 when he produced a “photomicrograph” of an individual flake. For the first time, the intricacies and variations of snowflake structure could be documented.

=== Disco Clams ===
Dougherty strove not only to understand this mechanism but also to identify its purpose. Some creatures use bioluminescence to ward off predators, Dougherty isolated a disco clam with a mantis shrimp—the clam’s natural predator—in an aquarium. Dougherty hypothesized that this increase signified a warning to the mantis shrimp. Using a photometer, Dougherty measured the frequency of the disco clam’s light bursts. As the mantis shrimp approached the clam, its flashes increased in frequency from 1.5 to 2.5 hertz.
